International Walk to School Day PDF Print E-mail

Elementary students throughout San Luis Obispo County will be joining schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 5. In 2010, Walk to School Day efforts included over 3,500 schools from all 50 states. This year, participants will join nearly 4 million children and adults in 40 countries around the world. In San Luis Obispo County, approximately 21 schools will host a Walk to School Day championed by Rideshare’s Safe Routes to School Program, the SLO County YMCA afterschool program, the City of SLO Parks & Rec afterschool program, and HEAL-SLO.

Walk to School Day events create safer routes for walking and bicycling, emphasizing the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment, and building connections between families, schools and the broader community. Walk to School Day in San Luis Obispo County is part of a greater Safe Routes to School movement to foster positive change within the lives of the students and their community. Rideshare’s program empowers Safe Routes to School Champions at K-12 Schools through education, support and grant funding.

To congratulate the efforts of participants, each school will be awarding walkers and bicycle riders with incentive prizes and activities. Students at Baywood Elementary will be greeted with breakfast treats and Bishop’s Peak will be thanking parents with a hot cup of SLO Chai. Oceano Elementary will also participate throughout the month with regular Walk and Roll to School Days and will award their students with raffle prizes and other goodies including bookmarks with tips on how to bike and walk safely.

Walk to School Day is being organized by SLO County YMCA, SLO City Parks & Rec., and HEAL-SLO as well as various dedicated parent and teacher volunteers with help from the San Luis Obispo Regional Rideshare.  For additional information regarding SLO Countys Safe Routes to Schools programs and events, please contact Angela Nelson at (805)781-1385 or by email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
