The San Luis Obispo Garden blooms with an abundance of low-cost outdoor children’s activities this fall. On November 5, 1 – 3:30 p.m. the Family Fun Garden Cooking teams up with Cal Poly health and nutrition organization, STRIDE, for a family-style cooking class. Children and guardians will discover the joy of cooking fresh-from-the-garden meals using local organic produce. They will harvest some vegetables from the Children’s Garden, and then whip up a meal for the family to share. Taste fun and creative recipes prepared by your kids and learn tricks and tips for creating an edible backyard garden. Class is age appropriate for second to sixth grade kids and guardians of all ages. Class is $25 per child and guardian, additional $5 per family member. Garden Members receive a $5 discount. RSVP ahead of time; space is limited (805) 541-1400 ext. 304 or email

At this event participants will harvest fall-time plants and children will learn about nutrition and how to grow vegetables through hands-on activities. Creating meals and desserts in the commercial kitchen with plants from the Children’s Garden allows children and their parents to participate in a fun, active, opportunity to aid in the importance of children connecting with nature. The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden is located on 150 acres in El Chorro Regional Park off Highway One between Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo. When the master plan is complete, the Garden will be one of the only one of its kind in the United States exclusively devoted to the ecosystems and plants of the five Mediterranean climate regions of the world. Through its programs and facilities, the Garden fosters an appreciation and understanding of the relationship between people and nature and encourages a sense of stewardship toward the natural environment.
