Friday, 30 April 2010 10:28

Cuesta College will host the California FFA Agricultural Welding State Finals for high school students on Saturday, May 1 from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Eighty high school students from around the state, including Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, Atascadero, Templeton and Shandon, will compete in a series of events for the state title and a share of $10,000 worth of equipment and prizes.

This is the fourth year the event has been held, and Cuesta College’s Rob Thoresen, lead welding technology instructor and event organizer, hopes to make it a national event.

The contest will be divided into four categories: welding application, written test, job portfolio/application and weld testing/inspection. Students will have from 8 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. to rotate between stations and complete each event.

"This provides high school students real industry and career preparation, and it provides their instructors a real resource in Cuesta College," Thoresen said. "It is a well rounded and in-depth competitive event that really reflects the welding industry."

Thirty Cuesta College welding students will share the leadership responsibilities in administrating Saturday’s event. Following the round robin competition and lunch break, a critique and sub-contest awards will be presented at Cuesta College at 2:30 p.m. At 5:30 p.m. an awards assembly will be hosted at Cal Poly.
