Golf tourney helps Big Brothers Big Sisters PDF Print E-mail

Big Brothers Big Sisters and the San Luis Obispo Exchange Club will present their "Golf for Youth Charities Summer Classic" next month.

The 21-hole tournament will be held on Friday, July 23 at the Monarch Dunes Golf Course in Nipomo. Golfers will be treated to lunch, a variety of on-course contests, and post tournament awards social. 

The cost is $125 per golfer, and those who register by July 9 will also receive an additional free round of golf with cart at Monarch Dunes.

shakespeare The Central Coast Shakespeare Festival is back for a second season of Shakespeare under the stars at the amazing River Oaks Hot Springs Amphitheater in Paso Robles.

Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” and a sparkling new play called “The Gamester” will be performed in repertory July 9 through Aug. 14 at River Oaks Amphitheater, 800 Clubhouse Drive in Paso Robles, California. Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees begin at 6 p.m.

Grab blankets and beach chairs, family and friends, bring a picnic basket and a smile to enjoy live theater al fresco in Paso Robles.

Cerro Caliente Cellars will host its fifth annual Hot Rods & Cool Wines car show on July 17. The public is invited to come out and enjoy as the winery celebrates summer with this car show, barbecue and wine tasting from noon to 4 p.m. at its San Luis Obispo winery, 831 Via Esteban.

Central Coast Gymnastics celebrates 19th anniversary PDF Print E-mail

ccg Central Coast Gymnastics (CCG) will celebrate is 19th anniversary in San Luis Obispo on July 2 with free prizes, giveaways, hot dogs and beverages starting at 11 a.m. until supplies are gone.

Enter to win, among other prizes, a free month of tuition. CCG will also be celebrating with specials all day for potential new students who want to enroll for the summer.

“CCG was born on July 2, 1991 and has been a dream that has grown beyond my imagination when I first started it in the old SLO Library at 888 Morro Street (now the SLO Little Theater) that first day with only 10 kids,” said CCG President Mimi Phene-McKellar in an e-mail.

“Over the past 19 years, I have had the honor of working with some amazing people that came to CCG to work when they were in college and then went on to start careers, and families,” she added. “Some of my previous athletes that turned into coaches & staff that has gone on to marriage and having their own families are now bringing them to CCG, too.”

Auditions for the Clark Center Search for the Stars Competition will be held on Aug. 21, in the Studio Theatre of the Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande.  
 
Twenty-two acts will be selected to compete in the semifinals of the competition that will be held on Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. 

Five theater and music professionals, including a radio personality, casting/booking directors, an Emmy award winner and a music producer, will choose 10 contestants to return after intermission to perform a second song with live accompaniment by the Jim Townsend Blues Band, and compete to win the grand prize.

Last year's Summer Sunset Concert Series was such a success that Pear Valley Vineyards is doing it again.

The free series features guitar wizard Billy Foppiano and his son Charlie, as well as a different musical theme each night, from beach-tunes to music of the 50s and 60s. Each concert is held on the third Thursday of June, July and August.

Barbecue fundraiser helps local helping hand PDF Print E-mail

Reserve your table or tickets now for the fourth annual Jack’s Helping Hand barbecue fundraiser to be held at the Santa Margarita Ranch on July 10.

The event starts at 4:30 p.m. with wine and appetizers, followed by a sumptuous barbecue dinner. Silent and live auctions with volunteer auctioneer Jim Settle will be held, plus music by "The Bangin’ 58’s."

Every year, the fundraiser provides much needed donations to support the special needs children in SLO County through the ongoing programs and services that Jack’s Helping Hand is proud to offer.

Cal Poly Summer Reading kicks off with former SLO Poet Laureate PDF Print E-mail

Former SLO  County Poet Laureate Dian Sousa will join Los Angeles-based non-fiction author Dinah Lenney on June 23 to kick off the second annual Cal Poly Summer Reading Series.

The free reading will take place at 7 p.m. in Science North (Building 53), Room 215 at Cal Poly.

Sousa, a San Luis Obispo native, attended Cal Poly and has been charging up West Coast poetry audiences for two decades. Her second book of poems, "Lullabies for the Spooked and Cool," is published by Mille Grazie Press.

On June 26, the Family Care Network will host its 2nd Annual Wild West BBQ Bash, a family-friendly event that benefits foster and high-needs children and families on the Central Coast.

The public is invited to enjoy live entertainment and world-class barbecue as culinary teams from Santa Maria and around the state compete for the Wild West crown. 

The event will feature live music, great food from local vendors, family activities, and the opportunity to taste and vote on world-class barbecue.
