Youth outreach grows at the Performing Arts Center PDF Print E-mail

performing arts center youth outreach At a time when arts-related programs have been cut from our public schools at an alarming rate, the Performing Arts Center in San Luis Obispo, Calif. has stepped in to help fill the void by partnering with local arts organizations to bring increased children’s programming to the PAC.

Now the Performing Arts Center has begun a two-year transition to become responsible for booking and presenting children’s programs.

A full-time position will be created. It will be dedicated entirely to youth programming and outreach. This position will be responsible for managing and expanding the primary existing program – School Matinees – while creating new programs to further engage young people in the arts and increase their participation in the creative process.

Last month, the Foundation for the Performing Arts Center received a generous grant from the Hind Foundation to support the creation of this new position.

The Hind Foundation, known for its dedication to preserving the cultural heritage of the San Luis Obispo community, has been keenly focused on the performing arts this spring.  Responsible for the grant funding the 2009 Bravo Award, the Hind Foundation made possible Variable Velocity Performance Group’s debut in Sidney Harman Hall on April 29/30 with “Extraordinary Mysteries”.

“As arts education opportunities are limited right now, we are incredibly grateful to the Hind Foundation for supporting the PAC's commitment in keeping performing arts experiences accessible for our young people,” Melody Klemin, new youth outreach coordinator acknowledged,

The Foundation for the Performing Arts Center was established in 1986 to support its partners, the City of San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly State University, by raising private funds for the construction and operation of the Performing Arts Center which opened its doors in 1996. Each year thousands of generous individuals and local businesses make contributions to the Foundation to keep the Performing Arts Center thriving, well-equipped, affordable, and accessible to our county’s young people.
