The SLO County VITA Coalition offers FREE tax preparation services. From January through April, AARP, Cal Poly State University, Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County, and United Way of San Luis Obispo County will offer free tax help to low- to moderate-income individuals and families who qualify. Sites are located across San Luis Obispo County, and appointments are available on weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays. Bilingual volunteers are available at all sites. Individuals can dial 2-1-1 to schedule an appointment or confirm availability. To make a Saturday or evening appointment directly with CAPSLO, call (805) 549-7684.
All returns are prepared by certified volunteers and reviewed by certified tax preparers. These trained community volunteers may help with special credits, such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled. In addition to free tax return preparation assistance, most sites also offer free electronic filing (e-filing). Individuals taking advantage of the e-file program will receive their refunds in half the time compared to returns filed on paper – even faster when tax refunds are deposited directly into one's bank account. Qualified households include those with total earnings under $49,000, and who did not receive rental income or self-employment income in 2009. This program is funded in whole or in part by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 in cooperation with the California Department of Community Services and Development. More information is available online at www.unitedwayslo.org and www.capslo.org.
