leadership class XVII California Trails and Greenways honored the work of Leadership San Luis Obispo’s class legacy project this spring at a conference attended by outdoor specialists including State Parks personnel and community recreation directors from around California.

At the sold-out conference in Cambria, the City of San Luis Obispo, the Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers Association and Leadership Class XVII were recognized for its collaborative work in creating public access and promoting our area’s natural beauty while simultaneously protecting delicate riparian and field habitat.

Leadership’s Class XVII chose to work on the (at the time) newly acquired Johnson Ranch in preparation for opening it for public enjoyment.

"It was a great experience to collaborate with the Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers Association to create a beautiful trail for hiking, running and cycling," said class member Jennifer Porcher. "The Johnson Trail is truly a community effort and will be a lasting legacy for the Central Coast. I feel honored to have been a part of that."

City of SLO Natural Resource Manager Neil Havlik, architect of the city’s maturing greenbelt which includes the Johnson Ranch Open Space calls the award well-deserved.

"Collaboration such as shown at the Johnson Ranch certainly typifies the spirit of our citizens," Havlik said. "We’re willing to work together to ensure that access to the great outdoors is available to everyone."

Leadership San Luis Obispo has graduated over 650 business, government and non profit members of our community in its 20-year history.

Each class creates a unique legacy project benefitting the community. Class XX applications are now being accepted at www.leadershipslo.org.
