On November 15, 2011 city council awarded a construction project to John Madonna Construction Co. for improvements in the downtown area along two blocks of Higuera Street from Morro to Garden streets. Improvements will include installation of mission style sidewalks, upgrading tree grates and tree wells, installing additional street light fixtures, painting street lights and signal poles as well as other improvements. This project is part of the 2009-11 Capital Improvement Program adopted by council in July of 2009.
Construction is scheduled to begin January 3, 2012 and is estimated to run through April 2012. Schedules are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances and weather conditions. Work for this project is scheduled from 2 a.m. to 10 a.m., Monday through Friday in order for construction to be completed before most businesses open each day. Some daytime work will occur during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but will be limited to low impact activities. Noisy work such as saw cutting and jackhammering will not occur until after 5 a.m. to minimize noise for residents living downtown. Those having sidewalk work performed in front of their businesses will be contacted directly by the contractor one week before work begins and then again two days before work begins. City staff has worked closely with the SLO Downtown Association to develop ways to lessen impacts to business owners and tenants while the construction work is taking place. Work was delayed until winter to avoid impacting businesses during their busier summer months.
