San Luis Obispo County was awarded $176,477 to support emergency and crisis services in 2010. This amount is directly related to the number of unemployed individuals in the county. Local priorities for funding emphasize keeping people in their homes, agency collaboration to prevent duplication of efforts, and supplement feeding and sheltering efforts in ways that make a difference. For the 28th year, the Emergency Food and Shelter National Program has allocated funds to supplement and expand ongoing efforts to provide shelter, food, and supportive services for the nation’s hungry, homeless, and people in economic crisis.
In a collaborative effort, the funds are administered locally by a board of health and human services representatives and community members. Members of the local board represent American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County, Department of Social Services, the Ministerial Association, Salvation Army, United Jewish Communities, and United Way of San Luis Obispo County. The board is seeking a formerly homeless representative. For the second year, Beth Quaintance of Salvation Army will serve as the chairperson.
