Pacific Eye LogoThe Pacific Eye team welcomes all community members to sign up for the first annual Walk-a-Thon, which will raise money for desperately needed cataract surgeries in developing countries.

It only takes $100 to pay for three basic cataract surgeries in third world countries. With this in mind, the Pacific Eye team is hoping to raise $10,000 dollars to fund over 300 life-changing cataract surgeries.

The Walk-a-Thon will take place on Saturday, April 24 starting at 10 am. The 2.5 mile walk starts and finishes at Ramona Park in Grover Beach. This is a healthy and fun event that is open to friends, family, and the community.  You can participate in several ways; you can walk and show your support, sponsor someone to walk, or make a donation.

In the US, patients with cataracts can receive care relatively quickly.  However, in third-world countries care isn’t as easily accessible and as a result cataracts leave many patients suffering from a lifetime of blindness. These individuals become unable to provide for their families or their community, and they need constant care.  The results of the cataracts put a strain on their family members, who must take time out of work or school in order to care for the blind.

Just one cataract surgery can make a difference for an entire family.

Pacific Eye’s research foundation was created with the main goal of helping patients receive quality eye care both locally and globally.  This foundation plans to build hospitals globally, provide research facilities and continuing education for physicians.

Pacific Eye’s CEO Rob Thielscher says, "After Pacific Eye’s recent medical missions to Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico we empathize with the great need for qualified eye care and physicians in third world countries.  As a foundation we can make a positive impact on a much larger scale by providing accessible eye care to those in need."
