NAWIC Turns Grant into Gifts for Teens PDF Print E-mail
The Central California Coast Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) has been awarded a $500.00 grant given by the Santa Maria Women’s Network. The 2011 Holiday Community Project Grant was awarded to NAWIC to advance the chapter’s annual efforts to provide holiday gifts and gift cards to Santa Maria area foster teens.

Each year, the Central California Coast Chapter of NAWIC fills at least 60 Christmas bags to disperse to area foster teens. However, thanks to the grant, 30 additional bags will be distributed. The bags consist of handmade knitted or crocheted hats and scarves by chapter members, Christmas ornaments, candy, pens, handheld games and personal hygiene items. A $10 gift card from a fast food restaurant or retailer is also included in each bag.

“There are many organizations that collect toys for underprivileged children, but teens are often overlooked,” Foster Teen Chairperson, Jane Kokkinakis explained.

This year’s Foster Teen bags will be sent to the following locations:
30 bags to San Luis Obispo County Social Services
30 bags to Santa Barbara County Social Services
30 bags to CASA of Santa Barbara County (Court Appointed Special Advocates)
