Cal Poly has launched a mobile website to offer up-to-date news on progress, detours and other information about the campus’ Center for Science construction project.

The project has been dubbed “Area 52” to capture a sci-fi pun referencing the project that will replace the north half of Building 52. The Center for Science will provide 200,000 square-feet state-of-the-art teaching and study space for the physics and chemistry departments.

The new website, one of the first of its kind on the Central Coast, is available to both iPhone and Droid smartphone users at www.area52calpoly.com. Mobile websites differ from traditional websites in their ease of use on mobile devices, and offer users a unique information providing experience. The primary feature of the Area 52 mobile site is Google’s FootMap, which shows users recommended paths through campus to help avoid construction zones and unwanted delays.

The Area 52 mobile webpage is the first mobile site used by Cal Poly and was produced by local integrated branding company Barnett Cox & Associates as part of an overall marketing campaign designed and implemented by the firm.
