This month's Good Morning San Luis Obispo lands on Earth Day, April 22, and the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce has a packed program for its members. All registrations must be received by April 20 at 5 p.m. Here are a few speakers attendees can expect to hear from on Thursday from 7:30 - 9 a.m. and Grace Church in downtown San Luis Obispo. A new adventure Lauren Brown is best known locally as the co-founder and longtime CEO of JBL Scientific, a SLO biotech firm that later became Promega Biosciences. After a stint in Madison, Wisconsin, Brown is back. Never happy to sit still for long, he's planning a coast-to-coast solo bicycle ride to raise money for charity. He'll depart the day after GMSLO. Smoking ban to cover all public spaces The City of San Luis Obispo has been rife with controversy over the new smoking ban that is likely to go into effect later this spring. The ordinance will cover everything from sidewalks to public parks, parking structures and parking lots. City Attorney Christine Dietrick will be on hand to discuss the ban, and tell employers how this ordinance could affect employees and businesses in San Luis Obispo. Story of strength and hope against all odds Today, Carissa Phelps has a law degree and an MBA from UCLA. But years ago, she was abandoned in the lobby of the juvenile hall in Fresno, ended up homeless on the streets and was forced into prostitution. She was 12 years old. Phelps will inspire you with her story, speaking on the correlation of youth homelessness and economic development, and sharing what it took to overcome the challenges of her youth. Reducing stigma of mental illness More than 50,000 San Luis Obispo residents struggle with depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, according to the SLOtheSTIGMA documentary. Fear of social stigma propels them deeper into darkness. SLOtheSTIGMA is a campaign designed to reduce the stigma of mental illness and guide people to resources in San Luis Obispo County. Hear a first-hand account of living with depression from Curtis, a San Luis Obispo county resident featured in the film. Coppélia – True love gone awry Enjoy an excerpt from one of the most well-known and beloved comedic ballets – Coppélia – about an eccentric inventor who is infatuated with a life-sized doll he created. Watch as dancers from Ballet Theatre San Luis Obispo perform Act I’s “Ballade”.
