Tolosa Press, publishers of The Coast News, The Bay News and the SLO City News community newspapers in San Luis Obispo county, gained national attention recently when it was featured on the “How I saved my Company” section of The New York Times website. The article, titled “How I Saved My Company: Tolosa Press Community Newspapers,” features this San Luis Obispo company, explaining how it bounced back from the brink and ended up with an amazing first quarter in 2009 (revenue was up 40 percent). Tolosa Press is now looking to hire.
The site showcases videos submitted by companies who tell their story of survival and includes specific steps that were taken by the company to have made it through the current economic slowdown.
The videos are on the NYT website and are a part of the Small Business section called “You’re the Boss: The Art of Running a Small Business.” The New York Times invited small-business owners to submit videos about what it is like to own a company that struggles but survives. “We believed our story was compelling and were thrilled to find out the NYT thought so too,” said Chris Gardner, Executive Editor. “They even joked that we should come save the NYT,” Gardner added.
