Hospice of SLO County (HSLO) recently announced that Sonnie Brown has accepted the position of volunteer director, following long-time Director Steve Willey and receiving a unanimous approval from a seven-person interview panel consisting of staff, volunteers, and board members. Brown has been a volunteer with HSLO since the mid-1990s, putting her talents into the music therapy program, as an in-home volunteer, followed by training in the Sacred Art of Living and Dying.
Brown has had over 20 years of experience as a volunteer coordinator and event director for organizations including public radio, literacy, Special Olympics, music festivals, conferences and a variety of educational activities. During that time, she has also played a key role in recruiting, developing and retaining volunteers. Her understanding of hospice work, personal experience in vigil and in-home volunteering and professional experience in volunteer recruitment and leadership are qualities the interview panel found remarkably well suited for this position.
Hospice of San Luis Obispo County supports the community in coping with loss and promoting healing by providing free counseling, community education and volunteer support to those grieving a death or dealing with potential end of life issues. More information can be found at www.hospiceslo.org.
