Later this month, the city of San Luis Obispo will be upgrading its utility billing system to better serve its customers – city residents. The upgrade will bring many benefits that improve billing flexibility and efficiency. The existing system has been in use since the 1990’s. “An improved utility billing system is overdue and we are very excited to be bringing this advanced technology to city residents,” San Luis Obispo Finance Director Charles Bourbeau said. “Ultimately, this new system will make utility billing more efficient and convenient for both the consumer and the city, saving time and money.” |

San Luis Obispo County’s Hearst Castle will relive its Hollywood heydays of the 1920s and ’30s for one star-studded night during the “Hollywood to Hearst Castle” event on Friday, March 9, 2012, as part of the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival (SLOIFF). The VIP event includes an historic movie screening of Citizen Kane, a private tour of the castle, indoor poolside food and wine and more.
Honored guests, actor Harrison Ford and renowned Hollywood photographer Timothy White, will start off the evening’s festivities at 5 p.m. by flying into Hearst Ranch’s private airfield, just as William Randolph Hearst’s high-profile Hollywood friends once did. |

In keeping with the mission and values of Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), a health care system dedicated to improving the quality of life for our communities served, the CHW Hospitals of the Central Coast, Arroyo Grande Community Hospital, French Hospital Medical Center and Marian Medical Center, have named 20 local nonprofit organizations as the recipients of the 2011 CHW Community Grants totaling more than $169,000. CHW grant funding is used by local organizations to provide services to the underserved populations of the economically disadvantaged, women and children, mentally or physically disabled, etc. The intent of the annual community grant program is to help non-profit organizations with an interest in building healthier communities by improving local residents’ nutritional resources, physical activity and living conditions. |

The San Luis Obispo County Visitors and Conference Bureau and Sunset, the premier guide to life in the West, announce the third annual Sunset SAVOR the Central Coast to be held September 27-30, 2012. The third annual event returns following a successful 2011, which boosted the local economy by $2.93 million, a 22 percent increase from the inaugural event in 2010. Attendance grew by 20 percent to nearly 9,000 guests attracting more out of area visitors. “The growth trends are impressive for the second year of SAVOR,” said Stacie Jacob, executive director of the San Luis Obispo County Visitors and Conference Bureau. “SAVOR is the type of event that falls in line with our mission to create an experience and market the county as a choice destination leveraging our key assets of food, wine and a lifestyle the traveler seeks. We are excited about year three and our continued marketing partnership with the Sunset magazine team.” |

The athlete movers of Meathead Movers, who jog when they're not handling your household or office items, will help support race day logistics for the inaugural San Luis Obispo Marathon, Half Marathon + 5K races. Meathead Mover trucks and athletes will haul thousands of pounds of products to locations on the 26.2 mile course and the SLO Life Expo. "Meathead Movers and their athletes will be invaluable to our logistic efforts," said Heather Hellman, event director. "These guys are fit, reliable and know how to get things moved quickly. We're very happy to have them on our team."

Green Shorts, a film festival with a special focus on sustainability, has joined with SLO Rideshare and the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival (SLOIFF) to hold its annual video contest in San Luis Obispo this March. Filmmakers of all ages and abilities are invited to write, produce, direct, edit and score their own 1-2 minute short film on any topic related to saving our planet and being green. A panel of judges will be charged with selecting the top entries for screening during a special two-hour segment of the SLO International Film Festival on March 11, 2012. In addition, all submissions will be eligible for screening at the Green Shorts Film Festival in Santa Barbara on April 6, 2012. Filmmakers whose submissions are selected will receive six passes to the SLOIFF to attend this exciting event. Screenings will feature top ranked Green Shorts films, an awards ceremony and a filmmaker reception. The deadline for submitting a film into the SLO Green Shorts Festival is March 2, 2012. |

Study reveals winery’s success at popular events in the county Recipe Marketing released a survey this week on Central Coast wineries’ marketing practices at major events around the county, including Sunset’s SAVOR the Central Coast. Recipe says the report revealed that wineries do not leverage event attendance to their full potential.

One of the greatest barriers to recovery from a mental illness isn’t something an individual can control. It’s the social and cultural stigma they face. The BringChange2Mind campaign, created by Glenn Close, is devoted to removing that stigma and encouraging mental wellness. This year, the third annual “Journey of Hope” event proudly features Glenn’s sister, Jessie Close, and Jessie’s son, Calen Pick and BringChange2Mind. “Journey of Hope,” an inspiring and educational mental wellness forum, will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, at New Life Church in Pismo Beach. This is a free event, open to the public. |
