Cuesta College announces new energy program PDF Print E-mail

Cuesta College is opening an Energy Auditing Tool Lending Library and a SLO Home Performance Training Program for local residents and contractors.

Cuesta’s energy tool library was funded by the County of San Luis Obispo from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds. The purpose of the tool library is to provide affordable, quality energy tools to contractors and energy professionals to audit and retrofit local homes.

The tools can be rented for free until Aug. 31, 2011. After that time, a nominal fee will be charged to offset the ongoing cost of properly maintaining the tools. They are available to rent by professionals that hold a BPI, HERS, RESNET or an equivalent certification, although some tools will be available to homeowners in the future.

“Central coast home owners can now take advantage of rebates of up to $4,000 through the Energy Upgrade California program,” said Chad Worth, a Cuesta College Green Technology instructor. “The creation of the energy tool library removes a major barrier for dozens of local certified contractors interested in performing home energy retrofits and will ultimately help central coast homeowners take advantage of these rebates and save money.”

Cuesta College, in partnership with SLO Green Build, is also offering a seven-week Home Performance Training Program from Sept. 12 to Oct. 26, which is also partially funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The course will prepare students to take a field and written examination offered at the end of the class to earn a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Building Analyst certification.

The class will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings, with the addition of some weekend work. The enrollment deadline is Aug. 26, and the cost of the class is $340. Class space is limited to 15 students, and priority will be given to San Luis Obispo County-based contractors.

Applications are available at www.slogreenbuild.org.
