Wednesday, 24 February 2010 12:49

More than 300 business people are registered to attend the Good Morning San Luis Obispo breakfast, hosted by the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce, on Thursday to hear about a local doctor's recent travels to Haiti, the city's challenges and opportunities from a new perspective, the condition of Cuesta College and more.

Early registration is now closed to this event, but here's a quick look at what attendees can expect tomorrow morning from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at Grace Church in downtown San Luis Obispo:

SLO Doctor returns from Haiti
The earthquake in Haiti devastated the small country last month, and people across our county have made strong efforts to provide some relief. Orthopedic Trauma Surgeon Mimi Batin-van Rooyen recently returned from Haiti, and will give us a raw glimpse into the current state of the country and its health care needs from a local doctor’s perspective.

An early view with ‘fresh eyes’
San Luis Obispo welcomed Katie Lichtig as its new city manager last month and she will introduce herself to the business community at Good Morning SLO. The city manager position is the most influential government staff position in our city. Hear her explain the key opportunities and challenges that lay ahead for the City of SLO.

What is the state of commercial real estate?
Even with the economy appearing to be on its way to recovery, experts and watchdog groups warn about an impending commercial real estate crisis. Nationwide, about $1.4 trillion in commercial real estate loans will reach the end of their terms and require new financing in the next five years, according the Congressional Oversight Panel. Hamish Marshall is vice president of WestPac Investments, one of San Luis Obispo’s largest commercial property owners. Hear his perspective on what to expect.

Cuesta College’s plan during tough times
This hasn’t been an easy time for Cuesta College. It’s currently facing state budget cuts that caused it to all but eliminate its summer class offerings. The local community college was also put on warning status by the accrediting commission until improvements are made in nine areas. Gilbert Stork, interim superintendent/president Cuesta College will speak to these issues and tell us how he will navigate the college through these rough waters. Pat Mullen, president of Cuesta College Board of Trustees, will also speak about the search for a good college president and the process of filling that position.

Lift the spirit with food and wine
Get an exclusive look at the inaugural “Savor the Central Coast” event, on its way to San Luis Obispo County in October. This food and wine affair is presented by Sunset Magazine and the SLO County Visitors and Conference Bureau and highlights the food and wine of the Central Coast. Professional event organizer Josh Heiser, who’s been hired to coordinate the program, will highlight the culinary events for the four-day extravaganza.

SLO grows community of young filmmakers
There are a growing number of young people in San Luis Obispo County who have found their passion in the art of filmmaking. San Luis Obispo International Film Festival Director Wendy Eidson will introduce Cassie Brown, 18, and Clair Grzincic, 8, two talented youths involved in the festival’s Youth Filmmaking Program. They will speak briefly about the program and showcase their three-minute film to be featured at the Filmmakers of Tomorrow Showcase on Sunday, March 14.
