2009 Citizen of the YearThe San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce has named former city CAO John Dunn its 2009 Citizen of the Year for his exemplary contributions to the community.

The Citizen of the Year Award is the Chamber’s most prestigious award and is the only honor given at the Chamber’s Annual Dinner gala in recognition of unparalleled service to the community of San Luis Obispo.

Dunn, former chief administrative officer for the City of San Luis Obispo, has given to the community for more than 20 years in every facet, including private, public and nonprofit sectors. His community work is often considered to be the gold standard in community contribution.

“Community service is one of the best things people can do in their lives,” a slightly stunned Dunn said to the Annual Dinner audience. “We are blessed that we have such a strong sense of community here in San Luis Obispo. There are a lot of people out there who aren't nearly as fortunate as we are. Anything we can do to help those who are in great need will be appreciated. Volunteer. Provide your time, your talent, your money to helping a lot of folks in our very good community.”

Those close to Dunn say that because of his volunteer involvement, he is busier now than he was before retirement and is willing and able to help any group in need. From facilitation to speaking engagements to mentoring new leaders of our community, this year’s Citizen is always willing to donate his time, experience and expertise.

In recent years, Dunn has been involved in a large number of organizations. He sat as chair of the French Hospital Medical Center Board, was president of the Foundation for the Performing Arts Center, vice president of the Cal Poly Housing Authority, and sat on the boards of the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation and the San Luis Obispo Rotary Club.

He also served as a member of the Chamber’s Economic Development Committee.

Citizen of the year John Dunn “John’s volunteer efforts continue to make lasting impacts on our community,” said a Chamber member who nominated Dunn for the award. “He does this with a quiet strength and enormous purpose – to make this community the best it can be for all who live here.”

Another close friend of Dunn’s said, “If the measure of citizenship is commitment to one’s community, then this person tops the list.”

His past community service includes sitting on the board of the Mozart Festival, the American Cancer Society, and Lifespan Services. And since retiring from his post as CAO for the City, Dunn has supported many other worthy causes.

“The best thing about John is that, despite being tested in the rough and tumble public arena, he has never lost his idealism, his affection for people and his personal commitment to ‘good citizenship,’ a term used too infrequently these days,” said former City Manager Ken Hampian. “His passion and optimism remain as powerful as ever, and he brings that passion and optimism to his volunteer service and all of those he serves.”
