County urged to slow down on ag events ordinance PDF Print E-mail

Wedding The Chamber has cautioned the County that a proposed County Events Ordinance for rural land could have serious unintended consequences for business, non-profit organizations and agricultural operations in the area.

Development of the ordinance has been driven by a relatively small number of rural residents who recently moved into agricultural areas and now want any activity that generates noise or traffic to be prohibited or severely limited, even if these activities have been around for years.

By drastically limiting gatherings of more than 50 people like weddings, company picnics, family reunions and non-profit events on ag lands, the County would be taking away a significant source of revenue for some agriculturists, revenue that in some cases keeps them in business and the land in agriculture. Local business would be hurt because those attending these events from out of town stay overnight in local hotels, eat many meals in local restaurants, and shop in local stores.

One local farmer located just South of San Luis Obispo, says he alone hosts about 50 events a year and has never has a single complaint from neighbors. He estimates his events generate about 5,000 out of town visitors a year, most of whom stay overnight in our city.
