Are you following the Chamber yet? The San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce has taken social networking by storm in the last year. Its members can now follow the Chamber on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Diig, Flickr and other social media websites.
“Social media opens a world of opportunity for small businesses like no other platform has before,” said Dave Garth, president/CEO of the Chamber. “We’ve seen social networks work as a bridge to bring our members together, and we use them to promote and strengthen the local economy.”
In the past year, the Chamber has amped up its presence on social media sites, like Facebook and Twitter, to promote its member businesses, organizations and tourism in the community. The number of people who “like” the Chamber’s Facebook page has increased by about 368% since this time last year (from 98 to 459). And the number of followers of the Chamber’s Twitter page has increased by about 95% since last year (from 395 to 773).
“The Chamber is looking for more involvement and activity from members on those pages,” Garth said. “For members who may not have a strong presence yet on these sites, the Chamber’s social media pages offer a fun way to meet and mingle in a very casual setting.”
Members can take advantage of the Chamber’s social media presence by posting links about upcoming events (for example, by using the Chamber’s Facebook wall or LinkedIn discussion wall), commenting on Chamber updates, posting videos and liking other Chamber members, among other things. The Chamber removes any links or promotional items posted by non-members to allow for more exclusivity. Open vs. Exclusive The Chamber’s Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social media pages are open to the public, but its LinkedIn group is much more exclusive. As a professional network, LinkedIn’s goals are to connect the world’s professionals to make them more productive and successful.
The Chamber’s LinkedIn group is a members-only group, and only individuals with a Chamber membership (either through a member business, organization or individually) can join.
