America's 'Greenest Company' to address local businesses at 2009 Green Awards PDF Print E-mail

Nov. 9, 2009 ---

Learn how to implement sustainable practices while saving money from Hewlett-Packard, the “Greenest Company in America,” at the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce’s 2009 Green Awards luncheon tomorrow.

Ellen Jackowski, Hewlett‐Packard’s Corporate Environmental Sustainability leader, will discuss the company’s recent No. 1 spot in Newsweek magazine’s green business rankings. She will talk about the world’s largest technology company’s long‐time sustainability commitment and how those efforts have helped its bottom line.

“We’re fortunate to have such an innovative environmental business leader join us for the 2009 Green Awards,” said Tim Williams, CEO of Digital West and chair of the Chamber’s Sustainability and Resources committee. “Ellen will be able to give us the inside scoop on how aligning environmental initiatives and strategy can be good for businesses of all sizes.”

Jackowski will be the keynote speaker at a luncheon honoring local environmental leaders. Up to six businesses, organizations and individuals throughout the county will be recognized for their environmental leadership on Nov. 10 from noon to 2 p.m. at Grace Church. Registration costs $20 for Chamber members and $25 for nonmembers.

Nearly 70 nominations were received for this year’s awards and the winners will be announced at the awards luncheon. Nominees include businesses, organizations and individuals who have voluntarily undertaken efforts, projects or operational improvements to reduce pollution, improve resource conservation and sustainability, or improve air and water quality.

Criteria to select award finalists include environmental impact and sustainability, transferability to other businesses, business benefits, innovation and overall environmental leadership. This year’s winners will be selected by a seven‐member jury that includes John Ewan, Pacific Energy Co.; Erik Justesen, RRM Design Group; Karen Merriam, Santa Lucia Chapter of the Sierra Club; Wende Pearson David, The Land Conservancy of SLO County; Penny Rappa, Habitat for Humanity of SLO County (past winner); Todd Ventura, Poor Richard’s Press (past winner); and Williams.

Pacific Gas & Electric Co. is the major sponsor of the 2009 Green Awards. Other sponsors include the City of San Luis Obispo, Digital West Networks, First Solar and Pacific Energy Co.

The San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce, through its Sustainability and Resources Committee, intends to recognize up to six outstanding local businesses, organizations and individuals who demonstrate environmentally sound practices at a Green Awards luncheon on November 10, 2009.
