In a spectacular display of color, movement, music, and drama, “Balé Folclórico da Bahia” brings their Mardi Gras Carnival extravaganza to the Performing Arts Center on March 8 at 7:30 p.m.
Cal Poly Arts presents the show that comes with a “fasten your seatbelts” warning as an array of dancers, drummers, and vibrant party energy fills the Cohan Center stage.
The only professional folk dance company in Brazil, “Balé Folclórico da Bahia” was formed in 1988 and has achieved considerable success in its relatively short history. The 38-member troupe of dancers, musicians, and singers performs a repertory based on “Bahian” folkloric dances of African origin, including slave dances, capoeira (a form of martial arts), samba, and those celebrating Carnival. The company presents the region’s most important cultural manifestations under a contemporary theatrical vision that reflects its popular origins.

The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden blooms with an abundance of low-cost outdoor children’s activities this early spring. With a goal of "education through exploration," the SLO Botanical Garden helps children of all ages learn about sustainability, where food comes from, and how to eat healthfully.
The entire garden is made of edible plants that can be used for medicinal teas, spices or a side dish for dinner. The goal is to teach children about where their food comes from, and why it’s important to make healthy eating choices. On March 12 from 1 to 3 p.m., Family Fun Garden Cooking will bring the Children's Garden together with Cal Poly health and nutrition advocates STRIDE in a family-style cooking class. On March 26, Yoga Flirt will hold a carnival-style fundraiser to benefit Jill Pentoney, a local middle school teacher and fellow Yoga Flirt.
Pentoney has taught at Atascadero Junior High School for nearly 20 years. In 2008 Pentoney was diagnosed with fallopian tube cancer, which is the rarest form of cancer of the female anatomy. After her first round of treatment, she was able to return for the school year, only to discover in 2010 that the cancer had returned. Due to a six month cap on donated sick leave, while undergoing treatment this time around, Pentoney will need to pay for her substitute – out of pocket. The Yoga Flirt community is happy to step in and help raise money to support her during this challenging time. |
