Citizens for SLO, the grassroots group in support of Ballot Measures A and B in the upcoming mail-only election, is hosting a bike ride around various San Luis Obispo neighborhoods at a special bike rally tomorrow to help encourage yes votes on the two important measures in August. Bicyclists, families and supporters of both measures are encouraged to participate. The rally will start and finish at Mitchell Park on July 30 from 9:45 a.m. to noon. “Cyclists are one group who can make a very visible show of support for approving Measure A and B just in time for the election,” said Lauren Brown, an avid cyclist and co-chair of the Citizens for SLO committee. “Bicyclists are just one of the many groups that will be negatively impacted over time by forced cutbacks the city will make to pay for the enormous mandated expenditures for pensions and exorbitant pay increases for police and fire imposed by outside arbitrators. And a big turn-out will earn us the coverage that’s been requested from all the media. At least one TV channel plans to cover us. Be there and help our cause!” |

When Tyler Borges, age 11 years, runs the 5K at the Central Coast Cancer Challenge on Aug. 7 at Laguna Lake Park with his mother, brother and friends, it will be a day of fun, celebration and, in a small way, triumph over his on-going fight against cancer.
Team Tyler, along with other teams and hundreds of individuals who participate in the Challenge are raising funds for local cancer support charities Jack’s Helping Hand and the Cancer WellFit program. Most have been touched by cancer and it is their way of honoring a loved one.
Last year, nearly 500 registered athletes, many of them cancer survivors, participated in the 5K, 10K and Children’s 1-Mile runs and the 100K and 50K cycling events that raised $12,000, strictly through registration fees. The event hopes to gain participants this year and increase it’s giving. Participants can register by going to the Central Coast Cancer Challenge Website and clicking "Register." Each participant receives a Technical T-shirt (Kid’s receive a cotton T-shirt), a free Hot Dog, Jamba Juice and/or a beer (21 and older only). Online registration closes on Aug. 4 at 9 p.m. |
