Barbecue fundraiser helps local helping hand

Reserve your table or tickets now for the fourth annual Jack’s Helping Hand barbecue fundraiser to be held at the Santa Margarita Ranch on July 10.

The event starts at 4:30 p.m. with wine and appetizers, followed by a sumptuous barbecue dinner. Silent and live auctions with volunteer auctioneer Jim Settle will be held, plus music by "The Bangin’ 58’s."

Every year, the fundraiser provides much needed donations to support the special needs children in SLO County through the ongoing programs and services that Jack’s Helping Hand is proud to offer.

Former SLO County Poet Laureate Dian Sousa will join Los Angeles-based non-fiction author Dinah Lenney on June 23 to kick off the second annual Cal Poly Summer Reading Series.

The free reading will take place at 7 p.m. in Science North (Building 53), Room 215 at Cal Poly.

Sousa, a San Luis Obispo native, attended Cal Poly and has been charging up West Coast poetry audiences for two decades. Her second book of poems, "Lullabies for the Spooked and Cool," is published by Mille Grazie Press.

2nd Annual Wild West BBQ Bash

On June 26, the Family Care Network will host its 2nd Annual Wild West BBQ Bash, a family-friendly event that benefits foster and high-needs children and families on the Central Coast.

The public is invited to enjoy live entertainment and world-class barbecue as culinary teams from Santa Maria and around the state compete for the Wild West crown.

The event will feature live music, great food from local vendors, family activities, and the opportunity to taste and vote on world-class barbecue.

Niner brings wine education to the Central Coast

Everyone knows how to drink wine, but how many know how to taste wine? Niner Wine Estates presents its Summer Wine Education Series, a collection of seminars and tastings that will cover a variety of different topics to help further the enjoyment of wine.

The inaugural offerings will start with some basic lessons to help those just entering into the world of wine; will continue with a more in-depth investigation of how the tasting of wine is affected by everything from where the grapes are grown to what type of glassware you use for serving.

From a better understanding of wine tasting to the intricacies of food and wine pairing, the wine education programs at Niner Wine Estates will help both novice and experienced enthusiasts enhance their satisfaction and delight with the world of wine.

The SKIN Stop, a local beauty salon, presents the "Taking the Mystery Out of Your Skin" workshop in June.

The SKIN Stop helps customers keep their best face forward, and this interactive workshop will feature the difference between skin types and skin conditions, acidity versus alkalinity in beauty products, and more.

Free seminar focuses on eye health

Pacific Eye's Dr. Ahmad Amir will provide a public eye clinic on disease prevention and eye health next week at Kennedy Club Fitness in San Luis Obispo.

Dr. Amir serves as Pacific Eye's president and managing partner and has been practicing ophthalmology for 13 years. He was also recently appointed as legislative chair for the SLO County Medical Association.

The free health seminar is open to the public on June 22 from 6 to 7 p.m. Topics will include:
