Legendary Leon Redbone to perform at Clark Center PDF Print E-mail

leon redboneThe Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande will present the eccentric and mysterious Blues legend Leon Redbone on Friday, April 29, 2011 at 8 p.m.   

Recognized for his trademark white Panama hat, dark sunglasses and bow tie, Leon Redbone is a legendary singer with undefinable style.

At the core of his initial calling was the desire to simply honor songs from the past - a waltz with bygone days that established him as sole curator of the museum of 20th century music. Over the course of his 30-plus year, 15-plus album career, Redbone has continued his love affair with tunes from the turn-of-the-19th century, flapper-era radio ditties, Depression-spawned ragtime and World War II folk-jazz.

Hearst Cancer Resource Center to host 2nd Annual Women’s Day Tea PDF Print E-mail

The Hearst Cancer Resource Center proudly invites you to attend the 2nd Annual Women’s Day Tea on Tuesday, May 3 at the French Hospital Medical Center (FHMC). The tea will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. in the FHMC Auditorium and is dedicated to celebrating all the women in our lives.

Members of the community will enjoy tea and finger sandwiches as guest speakers Kris Kington-Barker and Millie Drum discuss survivorship, passion and living life to the fullest. Kington-Barker is currently the Executive Director for Hospice of San Luis Obispo County.

For the past 30 years, Kington-Barker has been involved in for-profit and non-profit healthcare, both as an administrator and a volunteer. Drum is a writer and facilitator for several journaling groups throughout the Central Coast. After keeping personal journals for more than 40 years, Drum enjoys sharing the benefits of journaling with others.

Bunny Trail Downtown PDF Print E-mail

Join "eggcitement" of the Bunny Trail Downtown on Thursday, April 21 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.  E. Bunny is inviting children along with their families and friends to “Hop Along the Bunny Trail,” visiting businesses throughout Downtown and filling their treat bags with candy.

Children can pick up their treat bag and map on Higuera and Chorro streets next to the Downtown Association Information Booth.  

Children will have the opportunity to take their picture with E. Bunny in the alcove of Jim’s Campus Camera at 770 Higuera Street for $3 to take your own photo with any video device, $5 for a keepsake photo with a photo mount and $6 for both.

Flavor of SLO returns to benefit local nonprofit PDF Print E-mail

flavor of slo For the third year running a Cal Poly Senior Project team is pairing up with local nonprofit United Way of San Luis Obispo County to present Flavor of SLO, a promotional fundraising event featuring tastings from more than 20 local restaurants, wineries and breweries.

The event will take place on Sunday, May 15, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Jack House and Gardens in San Luis Obispo. Flavor of SLO will feature live music, a raffle and a silent auction to win various gifts. Tickets are $35 for general admission and $25 for students, and $5 more the day of the event.

Rock/reggae favorites Gravy Pups and Cali Connection will be performing live music at the event and local vendors include Autry Cellars, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, Kelsey See Canyon Vineyards, Norman Vineyards, Opolo Vineyards, Central Coast Brew, SLO Brew, Firestone, Petra, Popoplo, Shalimar, Splash Café, Luna Red and Vraja’s. Cal Poly’s 18th annual Open House invites prospective and current students, alumni and the community to experience the glamour and glitz of "Polywood!," the theme for the April 14-16 event.

Open House gives students and their supporters the opportunity to spend the weekend exploring all that Cal Poly and the San Luis Obispo community have to offer.

On Thursday, April 14, the Open House Committee invites all visiting students and their families to a “Casting Call” in downtown San Luis Obispo at the community’s renowned Farmers Market. And Friday, April 15, takes students “Behind the Scenes,” offering a sneak peak of Cal Poly’s academics in which student can learn about curricula, hear from college deans and talk with faculty and current students.

French Hospital to 'Share the Hope' PDF Print E-mail

The French Hospital Medical Center (FHMC) Foundation is proud to announce that it will host the fourth annual “Share the Hope” event at Hearst Ranch on Saturday, April 16 from 4 to 10 p.m. All proceeds from this event will benefit the Hearst Cancer Resource Center (HCRC). 

The event, hosted by Steve Hearst, will feature a champagne reception alongside the Neptune Pool at Hearst Castle, a gourmet dinner at the Hearst Ranch Dairy Barn catered by Chef Maegen Loring of The Neon Carrot, live music by Monte Mills and the Lucky Horseshoe Band and a live auction. Over the past three years, the event has raised $383,000 before expenses to benefit the HCRC. 

The HCRC collaborates with community and physician partners to provide supportive and educational services necessary for cancer patients to understand their disease, manage treatment, and maintain dignity and quality of life throughout all aspects of their cancer experience.

Strauss’ ‘Capriccio’ screens live in HD at the PAC PDF Print E-mail

Cal Poly Arts and Opera San Luis Obispo are proud to present The Met: Live in HD – a live-streaming, high-definition transmission series screened at the Performing Arts Center direct from the famed Metropolitan Opera’s stage in New York City.

On Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center, The Met: Live in HD series will feature a new production of Strauss’ opera, "Capriccio."

On opening night of the 2008–09 Metropolitan Opera season, opera’s own Renée Fleming dazzled audiences when she sang the final scene of "Capriccio," Strauss’ wise and worldly meditation on art and life.
In the lavish full-scale Met Opera production transmitted live from New York City, Fleming performs Strauss' entire work, in which the composer explores the essence of opera itself.

Hike for Habitat PDF Print E-mail

"Hike for Habitat" on the scenic Bob Jones Trail between Ontario Road and Avila Beach on April 30 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Activities for children of all ages will be staged on the Ontario Road end of the trail, including opportunities to drive a nail, make a quilt square, or work on a Habitat mosaic. There will be information on the work of Habitat for Humanity in San Luis Obispo and Central Coast Salmon Enhancement will be on hand. T-shirts and entry into a drawing for prizes donated by local businesses are included.

Salisbury Vineyards, located next to the trail head on Ontario Road will be hosting a family friendly concert featuring The Mighty Croon Dogs between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Free admission to the Sea Life Center in Avila Beach is also included.

Cal Poly Open House Campus Showcase PDF Print E-mail

The public is invited to experience Cal Poly on Saturday at the Campus Showcase, part of the university’s 18th annual Open House.

Open House gives admitted and current students, their supporters, alumni and the San Luis Obispo community the opportunity to visit and learn about the university April 14-16.

The Campus Showcase will begin at 9 a.m. with the Poly Royal Parade, which kicks off at Grand Avenue and Perimeter Road and travels north toward Via Carta, ending at Dexter Lawn. Seating is available along the route.
