Train buffs, avid rail fans gather in SLO for Railroad Festival

The Central Coast Railroad Festival is set to kick off its second celebration this fall. The festival is designed to please both the casual train buff and the avid rail fan.

Attendees will be able to celebrate rail's history and future while experiencing all types of modeling, rail excursions, concerts, films, exhibits, ceremonies, historical presentations and special programs. Most Festival events will be free and all will be fun and very family friendly. The festival is set for October 7 through 11.

Sharing the Dream will host its 16th Annual Concert and Festival honoring the Life and Work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in January of 2011. Sharing the Dream is working with the GrassRoots II, Inc. organization to present this event on Oct. 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Arroyo Grande.

The afternoon concert will feature music, food, beer and wine and works to promote the ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This organization offers free clothing, household items, and emergency food to feed the homeless and others living on the Central Coast who cannot afford to provide for themselves or their families. The work began in the '60s as a result of a national program created after Martin Luther King’s 1964 march on Washington.

Inspired by that march and Rev. King’s Message, President Lyndon B. Johnson established the War on Poverty, funding the program. Because funding became available for it, all over the nation community organizers began to assess the needs of those living in poverty. Central Coast resident Maxine Lewis, an African/American woman, was that community organizer in San Luis Obispo.

Children’s Health Initiative of San Luis Obispo (CHISLO) will host the fourth annual Champions for Children event, “Sunset at the Rancho” on Sept. 11 at the Santa Margarita Ranch.

The event honors local individuals for their outstanding efforts in advocacy on behalf of local children.

san franscisco stand-up comedy competition Mark your calendars for Sept. 30, the night of the semi-finals of The 35th Annual San Francisco Stand-Up Comedy Competition in Arroyo Grande.

The Clark Center for the Performing Arts will host the competition at 7:30 p.m.

For more than two decades the San Francisco Stand-Up Comedy Competition has served as a major career springboard for many talented comedians including Robin Williams, Dana Carvey, Ellen DeGeneres and Dane Cook.

Hundreds of comedians audition each year to compete in the San Francisco Stand-Up Comedy Competition. Only thirty are chosen and the top 10 comedians will compete in the semi-final round of competition at the Clark Center.

These contestants aren't newbies - they're hot, comedy-club headliners who bring audiences nationwide to tears and will pull out all the stops as they vie for $25,000 in prize money and a future in TV and film. Performers will be judged in the areas of delivery, material, stage presence, technique and audience response from a group of carefully selected local judges.

Pops concert less than two weeks away

Pops by the Sea, an annual concert in Avila Beach, is just two weekends away for a "South of the Border" fiesta presented by the San Luis Obispo Symphony.

Tickets are on sale for $15 in the San Luis Obispo Visitors Center, 1039 Chorro St. in downtown San Luis Obispo or online at at www.slosymphony.com. Children 14 and younger are free.

Tickets are also currently on sale online for the annual Pops Grand Prize Drawing of Central Coast Getaways. Chart-topping country star to open Clark Center's new season

The Clark Center will open its 2010-2011 Season with Country Music Star Darryl Worley on Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts.

For 10 years, Darryl Worley has been a mainstay of modern country music - a distinctive singer and first-rate songwriter whose music has chronicled life, love and the world situation with equal facility.

Throughout his career, Worley has produced one of the most impressive and wide-ranging catalogs in contemporary music. Worley's six albums have produced eighteen singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, including three Number Ones: "I Miss My Friend," "Have You Forgotten?," and "Awful, Beautiful Life." "Have You Forgotten?" spent seven weeks at No. 1. Nine other singles have reached the Top 40 including the recent hit "Sounds Like Life."

Historic Preservation Ordinance and Guidelines workshop

A community workshop to discuss proposed updates to the Historic Preservation Guidelines and draft Historic Preservation Ordinance for the City of San Luis Obispo will be held on Aug. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ludwick Community Center, 864 Santa Rosa Street (on the corner of Mill) in San Luis Obispo.

This workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss how proposed changes may impact historic structures and development in historic districts; provide input to City staff; and learn about next steps in the public process.

In San Luis Obispo County, approximately 500 children are under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court because they were abused, neglected or abandoned by their parents. Many of these children live in foster homes, moving from one residence to another with appalling frequency. CASA volunteers provide a consistent source of support to these children, advocating for needed services and appropriate placement until a permanent home is found. Funds raised at Girls Night Out are used for recruiting, screening, training and supervising volunteer advocates. CASA is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization. Tickets for this event are $50 per person.
