Hot on the heels of the Google fiber initiative, the SLO Chamber Board voted unanimously to support the concept of a city fiber network for businesses. The SLO Chamber will also encourage the City to work cooperatively with potential fiber optic service suppliers. The concept to support a fiber network for businesses in San Luis Obispo came about after Digital West Networks, Inc. CEO Tim Williams announced his plans to install such a network in the city. "The Chamber's primary focus is to promote the economic health of the community, and a project like this is something that will do just that," said SLO Chamber CEO Dave Garth.
San Luis Obispo-based Digital West Networks Inc. is looking into installing a fiber optic network in the business areas of the city to deliver high-speed Internet and private traffic to business customers. Williams recently spoke to the Chamber’s Economic Development Committee to discuss Digital West’s current plans, which would include adding about six more miles of the fiber optic network to the San Luis Obispo business area. Williams told the committee that although this addition would be expensive, it is important to economic development for our city, as it will increase efficiency and allow businesses to spend fewer resources working around slower Internet access, and more time on providing quality service and products.
