After nine years as City Manager and 20 years after joining the City of San Luis Obispo, Ken Hampian is retiring at the end of the year. He plans to remain in the community and pursue other interests, including consulting and writing. The City will conduct an open recruitment process to seek his successor, the first open recruitment for the role since John Dunn was hired.
Hampian’s announcement comes after a painful – but successful – two-year budget process was completed. Mayor Dave Romero noted that Hampian leaves the City “in great condition with an excellent management team, a balanced two-year budget, an aggressive Capital Improvement Program, stable employee relations, and a smooth running City Council.” His departure will be a great loss to everyone who works in, lives in and enjoys this city.
