Newsmakers/Business Briefs Local telecom entrepreneur and Chamber Board member Jeff Buckingham has taken a position with New Edge Networks. Buckingham will oversee the national DSL provider's central coast operations. San Luis Obispo Police Chief Jim Gardiner was recently awarded the Special Olympics Heroes Award. Gardiner, who has been involved with the Special Olympics Southern California for 12 years, is the fifth recipient of this national award in California. Carrie Sims has been named Top Sales Person for GTE Wireless, California Region for the seventh year in a row. Sims was also the highest producing Sales Representative for GTE Wireless in the California area. Robert Franklin, the San Luis Obispo representative for the financial services firm Edward Jones, was one of ten representatives honored at a business management forum in New York, New York. Franklin was recognized for his outstanding business management skills. Cynthia Anthony has been appointed Administrative Director of Pacific Repertory Opera (PRO), the Central Coast's only Opera company. Anthony will be responsible for marketing, donor development, grant writing and establishing PRO as a regional presence. Elaine Chin and Alice Tomasini, of Cal Poly's University Center for Teacher Education, have been selected as Carnegie Scholars in the Pew National Fellowship Program.
